Concordia-Forschungsstation in der Antarktis

The COMICS project (Concordia Microbial Dynamics) based on the MISSEX project focuses on analysis of the microbial diversity of the bacterial populations from the Antarctica Research Station CONCORDIA. Microbial diversity will be analysed on crew samples and on samples from the technical equipment of the research station. Emphasis is laid on Gram-positive (G+) nosocomial and pathogenic bacteria and their plasmids. Plasmids will be analysed with respect to size, conformation, DNA transfer and mobilization abilities. Gene transfer capacity of nosocomial and pathogenic G+ bacteria will be analysed in multispecies biofilms simulating the biofilms in the Antarctica research station. Data on biodiversity and DNA transmissibility will reflect the biological hazard for the crew, they will enable risk assessment of generation of multiresistant pathogens and build up the basis for a better hygienic protection of the CONCORDIA crew. The obtained data of TU Berlin, together with those obtained by our collaborators in the project (Prof. Jacques Mahillon, UCL, Belgium; Dr. Nathalie Leys, SCK-CEN, Mol, Belgium; Prof. Laurence Van Melderen, ULB, Brussels, Belgium, Dr. Raphael Leplae, ULB, Brussels, and Prof. Francesco Canganella, UNITUS, Viterbo, Italy) will be made accessible in a public data base.
