Research in Microbiology of Well Clogging


The project WellMa is a cooperation project with different partners out of research and industry. Aim of the project is to explore the processes and influencing variables of well clogging. Especially geological and hydrochemical, as well as the structural and operational conditions are of interest. At the department of Environmental Microbiology, we do research on the influence these factors have on microbiological populations of selected drinking water  abstraction wells.  Our special focus lies on the iron bacteria, which due to their ability to precipitate iron hydroxides at the pump and the filterscreen, jeopardize the operation of these wells.


  • Biofilmpopulations of different wells are compared with the denaturing gradient gel elektrophoresis.
  • CARD FISH-Probes for ochre forming bacteria in drinking waterwells are calculated and optimized.
  • Biofilm samples from drinking water wells are characterized with the help of fluorescence in situ hybridization.
